Whats the deal with chrome wheels in the City of Chicago peeling all the time?! We see so many people who spent good money on a set of chrome wheels that only ended up peeling after 1 winter in Chicago. The sad fact is that the salt used to melt snow on the road during the winter is a killer on chrome. It seems like all it takes is one little piece of salt to get up or inside the chrome layering and the whole wheel will start to deteriorate and peel in sheets. Re-Chroming is an option but be warned that it is costly and time consuming (takes up to 4 weeks). The other thing that people do not always realize about re-chroming is that the process is not always perfect. The aluminum pits as the chrome layer corrodes and when the wheel is sent to be re-chromed there is no way to get out this pitting that occurs. The end result is a newly chromed wheel that looks beautiful with little specks of sand in it when you look closer. There are some preventative measures to be taken. One is to have your chrome wheels for summer use only and have a second set of anything for the winter. Second, you can have a clear coat applied to your chrome wheels before any peeling occurs to prevent any salt getting into the chrome finish and start the peeling process. Please be aware that we are still unsure weather this really prevents peeling. Most likely it only serves to delay what will almost inevitably happen with chrome wheels in the city of Chicago.
